SCHOOL AUDITORIUM COLUMNS MUST
CARRY AND ADDITIONAL 100,000 lb.
Renovations to the auditorium at a Schaumburg, Illinois middle school
required that two existing columns carry an additional 100,000 pounds each. The existing
concrete footings were inadequate to carry the larger load.
The engineers at TCDI proposed to install four ATLAS RESISTANCE PIERS Wall Mounted Plate Piers at the
concrete column bases. The pier pipe would penetrate the existing footing through holes
cored through the existing concrete.
Each pier was driven to a suitable bearing stratum and individually tested
to a capacity of 50,000 pounds. Finally, each pier was preloaded to 25,000 pounds. Which
provided the required total added capacity of 100,000 lb. with a 100% Factor of Safety!
The photograph above shows one ATLAS
2-PIECE PLATE PIER already mounted to the column base. Notice to the right of the
column base is the access hole for the pier pipe, it has already been core drilled hole
through the spread footing.
